Dewondis "De" R. Reed was born on January 28, 1934 to Lois Johnson and Howard Reed Sr. in Chicago, Illinois. Brother of LaJune Singleton, Joyce Randall and Howard Reed Jr., Dewondis was raised in the Grand Crossing neighborhood. "De" graduated from George Washington Carver High School in 1952. The year after high school, he was drafted into the US Army. Following his military service, Dewondis went onto his career at the U.S. Postal Service where he retired after 30 years. In 1963, Dewondis R. Reed married Anne Bruce and they welcomed two sons, Reginald and Manson Reed.
Dewondis joined Merrill Avenue Baptist Church in 1974, later to be known as Compassion Baptist Church (2011). Together with his wife Anne, they taught Sunday School for over 14 years. He also served as a Deacon at Compassion Baptist Church for over 20 years. He enjoyed music, especially playing the Harmonica.
Dewondis R. Reed was born into the Church Eternal rest on January 19, 2023. He will be welcomed by those who have preceded him in death: Wife Anne; son, Manson; his parents, sisters, brother and many loved ones and friends. Leaving to cherish his memories are his son, Reginald Reed, nieces: Patricia Griffith, Charlene Randall, Sherelda Alexander; great nieces: Jillian and Morgan Griffith; cousin and best friend Bonnie Little along with a host of other relatives and friends.
