Marie K. Herman
Born in Chicago, Illinois on February 3, 1927 to the late James (Vaclav) and late Marie (“Mary”) Karnik (Pesek) and passed away on February 17, 2020 in New Lenox, Ilinois at the age of 93. Beloved wife of 49 years to the late Robert William Herman (April 1, 1926-October 26,1996); loving mother of Kathleen Marie (late Robert Joseph) Scanlon and the late Debra Doreen (Thomas) Vana; cherished grandmother of Ryan Patrick Scanlon, Megan Marie Scanlon, and Tom (Michele) Vana and great-grandmother of Matt, Amy, and the late Jay Vana. She was preceded in death by her siblings and their spouses: James (Grace) Karnik, Frances (William) Vachuta, Frank “Fritz” (Barbara/”Gladys”) Karnik, Edmund (Helen) Karnik, and LeRoy Karnik. Marie and Robert resided in Hickory Hills, Illinois for many years but living on Lake Vermilion in Tower, Minnesota was always their dream so all of their vacation time for ten years prior to Robert’s retirement was spent building their home a little bit at a time. After Robert’s retirement, they moved into their home on beautiful Lake Vermilion, a place that engenders many wonderful memories for family and friends. Marie was a wonderful mother and kind to everyone she met. She was also an independent and resilient woman, plowing the snow around her home in Minnesota with her truck, as well as surviving breast cancer and a terrible car accident at the age of 80. Throughout the years, Marie enjoyed bowling, polka dancing, gardening, and Skipper, her Maltese. She was a lifetime member of the Czechoslovakian Society of America (CSA). Funeral services private. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Susan G. Komen Foundation, www.komen.org, American Cancer Society, www.donate3.cancer.org, or the Alzheimer’s Association, www.alz.org would be appreciated.
