Alice Page, age 97, formerly of Park Forest, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, February 26, 2019 in her home. Alice was born on October 12, 1921 in Chicago, Illinois to Walter and Mary Mitchell. Alice was preceded in death by her brother, Walter, and her sister, Betty (Doran). Loving wife of the late Howard Page; beloved mother of Kay (Bob), Jim (Amy), Jeanne, Joseph, and Elizabeth; dearest grandmother of Todd (Kerri), Sloane (Mike), Brett (Kasia), Kyle (Dave), Ian, Mitchell, Lowell (Paulicia), Olivia, Margot, Anna, Barbara (Jeff), Mike (Gloria), and Steve (Jean); beloved great-grandmother to Jorie, Aiden, Teegan, Jensen, Ellison, Larsen, Benjamin, Klara, Ailyn, MacGregor, Joseph, Patrick, Lindsey, Lexie, Rose, Kathy, Kahari, Amanda, Kaitlyn, Steven, and Jamie; dearest aunt of Thomas (Nancy) and Suzanne (Rod).
Alice graduated from Parker High School in 1939. After high school, she was later employed by Illinois Bell Telephone and the C&EI railroad. During World War II, she lived and worked in Washington State. Her favorite job came later in life as an antique enthusiast at Sell It Again Sam in Matteson, IL. Mitch, as she was known to her life-long friends, belonged to a girl’s club that met for over 50 years. Mitch and these women supported each other, traveled together, and drank martinis every week.
She was passionate about cooking, baking, reading, travel, antiques, friends, family, Lake Michigan, and the White Sox. A lifelong Democrat, Alice often volunteered as an election judge and encouraged her friends and family to fulfill their civic duty. All of her children and grandchildren had a favorite treat that she would make for their special occasions. Her signature dishes include Aunt Delia (no relation) sugar cookies, oxtail soup, chicken and dumplings, and beef stroganoff.
Alice met Howard Page, recently returned from the Pacific Theater of World War II, in 1946 on the South Side of Chicago. They began a whirlwind romance that led to their marriage in 1949. Shortly thereafter they built a house on Nassau Street in Park Forest, Illinois; chosen by Alice because it was the only lot that had 20 trees. Over the course of 45 years, Alice and Howie welcomed countless children, grandchildren, and friends into their home with an open door and a warm meal.
Mema, as she was known to her grandkids, remained fiercely independent in her final years; working well into her 80s, going on several vacations, and driving until she was 92. While words cannot do justice to the profound impact she had on scores of people, she will live on in their many joyous memories. Whether she was known to you as Chuck, Mitch, Al, Alice, or Mema; there is no denying that she was one-of-a-kind.
