Daniel W. Keogh, age 84, of Chicago, passed away peacefully at home on November 27, 2024 surrounded by loved ones.
Devoted husband of his loving wife of 59 years, Monica (Murphy) Keogh; proud father of daughters the late Courtney (John) Oroni and Jennifer (Mike) Hefferly; super proud grandfather of Sean Oroni, Betsy Oroni, Annie (Luke) Bajda, Connor Oroni, Joe (Tegan) Oroni, and Kyle Oroni; great grandfather of Carter Bajda; big brother of siblings Bill (Kay) Keogh, Peggy (Denny) Simmons, Jimmy (Kathy) Keogh, Susie (Jim) Boyd, and Kathy Keogh, and brother-in-law of the late Judy & Jim Dages, Roger & Marilynn Murphy, the late Malachy Murphy, Brian & the late Marlene Murphy; and a fond uncle to many nieces and nephews.
A proud south-sider, Dan was born on July 23, 1940 and grew up in the Mount Greenwood neighborhood where he attended St. Christina grade school and St. Willibrord high school. After high school, he enlisted in the Air Force and served four years stationed in Tennessee and Colorado.
Dan & Monica met when he asked her to dance at the Brainerd Club and were together ever since. They married on August 14, 1965 and settled in Homewood to raise their family. Dan worked in Human Resources and as he built his career, he went to night school to earn his bachelor’s degree and master’s degree from Loyola University. Dan & Monica moved to New Lenox in 1993 where they enjoyed living and having family gatherings in their big backyard. After a successful career at various companies, including Perkin Elmer and United Stationers, Dan retired in 2005.
A lifelong learner and voracious reader, Dan had an inquisitive mind, terrific sense of humor, and his interests were many and varied. He loved ancient history and collected swords and coins. He was an avid gardener, antiquer, and, at one point, a bee keeper. An athlete and sports fan, Dan loved fishing and his favorite teams were Notre Dame football and the Go-Go White Sox. At age 63, Dan earned his PhD in organizational development from St. Benedictine University – their oldest doctoral student ever. Dan never missed an opportunity to strike up a conversation with anyone, anywhere to share a story or a joke. But, most of all, Dan loved his family and he will be dearly missed.
