Donald J. Donegan

September 23, 1939 — September 30, 2024

Lockport

Donald Donegan, 85, of Lockport, Illinois a veteran of the Army, passed away peacefully in hospice care on September 30, 2024. Born on September 23, 1939, Don was preceded in death by his parents, Daniel Donegan and Mae (née Maunsell), both proud natives of County Kerry, Ireland, as well as his beloved sisters, Peggy Lowery and Mary Rita Flanagan. He is survived by Barbara Donegan (née Walsh), and his children: Tammy Price (Dave), Thomas Donegan, and Daniel Donegan (Nicole).

Though Don was known for his tough exterior, becoming a grandfather brought out a softer side. He was a loving, proud, and devoted Papa to Kristen and Mallory Price (Erin Tamm), Dane Donegan, and Maya and Justin Donegan. His joy extended to his great-grandchildren, Dennis and David Wade, and his cherished dog, Lucky, who brought him comfort in his later years.

A true South Side Chicago Irishman, Don was known for his quick wit and sharp sense of humor. He spent his career as a laborer and construction worker in Union Local 4. Upon retirement, he followed his entrepreneurial spirit, opening Donegan’s Bar and later Pluto’s Hotdogs in Prophetstown, Illinois.

He was proudly known as the "Disturbed Dad” and loved to see his son Danny play. He was an avid sports fan, spent many years coaching his son’s football games, was an arm wrestling champion, and never wanted anyone to know that he was an excellent Macarena dancer (but now you do). Later in his life, Don made countless friends and memories while living in Marseilles, Illinois, a place close to his heart.

Don was deeply committed to volunteering for the American Legion, including at Post 33 in Ottawa, Illinois, where he demonstrated his unwavering dedication and patriotism for many years.
