Jack joined the Marine Corps in 1956, serving from 1956 to 1958. While in the Marine Corps, he played in the Marine Corps band and had the honor of participating in the Rose Bowl Parade. After being honorably discharged, he joined the Pipefitters Local 597 apprenticeship program and worked as a pipefitter for 40 years, retiring in 2001.

Jack had a great love for the arts. He enjoyed everything from attending the opera to playing the banjo. In his 40s, he began oil painting, but his greatest works were his charcoal drawings.

Jack also had a deep passion for sports. He coached his sons’ Little League teams before moving on to coach football. He started with the South Holland Jets, then coached at Thornwood High School and Rich South High School. Jack’s final coaching years were at Lincoln-Way East High School. Coaching and mentoring high school players kept him young—he continued coaching until the age of 83 and attended every football game afterward. He could be seen sitting on the bench with the team as recently as their playoff run in November of 2024. When Jack wasn’t on the football field, he was swinging a golf club. He never missed his Sunday morning golf game with his golf buddies.

Jack’s greatest love was his family. He attended every play, band concert, and sporting event his grandchildren participated in; he was referred to by them as their biggest fan. He would treat his family to a weeklong vacation in Wisconsin each year— where all his grandchildren learned to play solitaire. At the end of each trip, he would always thank everyone for spending the week with him.
