Kenneth Eugene Pownall

August 17, 1948 — March 19, 2025

Herrick, IL

Kenneth Eugene Pownall, a dedicated husband, father, and grandfather, passed away peacefully on March 19, 2025, in Herrick, Illinois, at the age of 76. Born on August 17, 1948, Ken was a man of many passions and interests, a collector at heart, whose life was rich with experiences and a love that resonated through every interaction.

Ken was not just a collector of coins, newspapers, and vintage items; he was a keeper of memories. His meticulous nature extended beyond his collections, as he took great pride in his paperwork, organized to perfection, a testament to his attention to detail. He was known for starting numerous projects, embodying a spirit of curiosity that inspired others. Despite his quiet demeanor, Ken had a kindness that made those around him feel at ease, always ready to lend a listening ear or share a puzzle challenge.

Together with his beloved wife, Mary Ann (nee Girolimon Cappelletti), they traveled extensively, creating a tapestry of beautiful memories intertwined with their mutual love for music. Ken cherished the moments spent with Mary Ann as she played hymns on the piano, often pausing to sing along, his deep voice harmonizing with the melodies they both adored. Over time, he developed a fondness for opera, thanks to his wife's influence, and his heart found joy in the rich musical traditions they experienced together, particularly in the vibrant landscapes of the south.

Ken was proud to have served in the United States Air Force, achieving the rank of Major over a commendable 24-year career. His dedication earned him numerous Medals and Certificates of Merit, particularly during his service in the Gulf War. He often reflected on his military experiences with humility and pride, respecting the camaraderie he formed along the way.

Family was at the core of Ken's happiness. He is survived by his loving wife, Mary Ann, and his children: Jennifer (Jim) Mohr, Brent (Carly) Pownall, and stepchildren Angela (Daniel) Cappelletti-Jackson, Brian Cappelletti, and Kelly Cappelletti. He was a proud grandfather of eight and a great-grandfather of two. His legacy lives on in the hearts of his family, who will forever remember his warmth, humor, and the countless life lessons he shared.

Ken was preceded in death by his father, Homer Eugene Pownall, and mother, Arletta Pownall (nee Moore). He held dear the relationships he formed with his brothers-in-law Robert and Dante Girolimon, Tony Admonis, and nephew’s and nieces. He also cherished his sister-in-law, Kate, along with numerous cousins he had grown up with.

Beyond his family ties, Ken was heavily involved in his community. He volunteered regularly at their church in Eureka Springs, Arkansas, whether as an usher or helping in the kitchen, demonstrating his unwavering love for God and willingness to serve others.

As we remember Kenneth, we find comfort in knowing that his spirit lives on through the cherished memories he has left behind. The visitation will take place on April 8, 2025, from 9:00 AM to 11:30 AM at Kurtz Memorial Chapel Ltd, New Lenox, Illinois, followed by a memorial service.
