Martha J. Lewis (Craig)
December 19, 2015
Martha J. Lewis, 85 of Aurora, a teacher at Krug School and a United Methodist Minister, died at Jennings Terrace of congestive heart failure. She was born in Des Moines, Iowa on March 30, 1930, but raised in South Bend, Indiana. In 1955, immediately after college, she was hired to teach at the Kamehameha School (for children with Hawaiian lineage) in Honolulu. In 1957, she moved to Neosho, Missouri to teach Kindergarten. While there, she got her Master's degree in Education. In 1966, she took a position at Krug School in Aurora. In 1978 (At the age of 48!), she felt moved to attend seminary to become a United Methodist minister. After seminary, she served in three Northern Illinois churches (Millington, Hampshire & Lockport) before returning to Aurora. She also served and presided at two Women's groups: P.E.O. Chapter HC and the Woman's Club of Aurora. She was well known as a "social connector," always introducing herself to people and then introducing them to each other. She is survived by her son, Craig and her daughter-in-law, Katherine. The family would like to extend their gratitude to all her many friends for their loving care and support. It was profoundly moving to see how many lives she touched by the expressions of love and concern during her illness. Memorial service will be held at Bethany of Fox Valley United Methodist Church, 2200 Ridge Ave, Aurora IL, 60504 on January 23, 2016 at 11:00 am. Flowers welcome, donations suggested to Aurora Animal Control & Care, 600 S. River Street, Aurora 60506 or Harbor Light Hospice at https://www.harborlighthospice.com/donate/.
