Peter Anthony Fernandez

Age 69, of Buncombe, IL, passed away peacefully on Sunday, August 18, 2024. Peter was born in Chicago, IL, to Agapita (nee Arias) and the late Valentine Fernandez. He was the beloved husband of Karen (nee McCarthy) Fernandez, sharing 40 years of devotion and partnership. Together, they built a family filled with love.

Peter was the proud and loving father of Anthony (Lindsey) Fernandez, Joe (Danielle) Fernandez, and Sarah (Cody) Runyan, and the cherished grandfather of Kaydence Runyan, Gabriel Runyan, the late Mckynzie Runyan, Stevie Fernandez, Hunter Runyan, and Joey Fernandez. His family was his pride and joy, and he always found time to pass along his passion for the outdoors to his children and grandchildren. 

A skilled and dedicated carpenter by trade, Peter was equally devoted to the natural world. He was an avid outdoorsman who found serenity in the woods and on the water. Whether it was the thrill of a hunt or a quiet day spent fishing, Peter cherished those moments in nature, often accompanied by his family, where some of the best memories were made. His love for hunting and fishing was not just a pastime—it was a way of life that he eagerly shared with those he loved. 

Peter is also survived by his dear sisters, Valerie (Jerry Hopkins) Koeppen and Lisa (Travis) Harris, along with many nieces, nephews, cousins, and lifelong friends, all of whom were touched by his generous spirit and boundless kindness. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him, but his memory will forever live on in the hearts of those who loved him and in the stories of fishing trips and hunting adventures told in the pit.  

The family will receive friends at Kurtz Memorial Chapel 102 E. Francis Rd, New Lenox, IL on Sunday, August 25, 2024, from 2 pm – 7 pm. Funeral services will be on Monday, August 26, 2024, with prayers at the funeral home at 9:15 am then to St. Mary Catholic Church, Mokena, IL for Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 am. Services will conclude at the church.
