WALTER J. PIUS
Walter J. Pius passed away Tuesday, September 4th, 2012. He was born in Peru, IL. He moved to Lockport when he was 3 years old and educated in the Lockport schools. Walter married his sweetheart Bessie Jean Edwards November 7th, 1941. The ceremony was conducted by Rev. John Paul Slafford at Trinity Methodist Church in Joliet. In August of 1941 Walter was sent to Manitowoc WI by the draft board to weld on the submarines. He spent 4 ½ years welding on the submarines until the war ended. After the war, Walter and his wife moved back to Lockport. Walter was a member of the Pipe Fitters Local #597 of Chicago. Walter and Bessie Jean were married for 64 happy years. Bessie Jean passed away in 2006. They belonged to the First United Methodist Church of Wilmington for 30 years. In his younger days Walter played kitten ball with the Farrel Manufacturing Company. They won 3 champion trophies in succession. That was a big accomplishment in those days. Walter was a part of a large family, 4 brothers & 2 sisters. The only one surviving is his brother Edward Pius. Walter's favorite hobby was fishing. He fished the North for 40 years for Musky and he sure caught his share of those big whoppers, but he just kept fishing for more…that hungry fisherman.
